There’s nothing like the words “your kid is watching porn” flashing on screen to tickle the worry of parents and that’s exactly what Mistress creatives Rachel Guest and Céline Falédam banked on when creating the Give The Talk campaign.

Launched in conjunction with International Children’s Day, the campaign featured porn star Monique Alexander in a PSA directed at parents, encouraging them to #GiveTheTalk to their children about sex before the porn industry does. A website, powered with tips for parents from content-partner Amaze, also launched.

“Thinking about your 9-year-old kid learning about sex from a hardcore porn star is pretty arresting. But we didn’t want to simply bring the issue to their attention, we also wanted to equip them with age-appropriate tools to open up the dialogue with their kids. Referring parents to an organization that could provide them with accurate online resource was really important to us.” – Guest

The origin of the project came from attending a Women’s Health Conference in Sydney, where the duo learned that, by the age of 9, nearly 90% of children have been exposed to hardcore porn. Give The Talk was born then from the conviction that their experience creating viral messaging could help shape healthier relationships for the digital generation.

“Online hardcore porn is not going to change overnight nor is it going to be introduced into school’s sex-ed curriculum. Our best hope is for as many parents as possible to pick up the issue and to have conversations with their children but also with other parents. That’s why we chose porn stars, the provocativeness of porn stars giving parents the ‘birds and the bees’ was sure to get picked up by the media.” – Falédam
